Slip On Ice-Skates

Hey, readers! Today, I will show you how to make ice skates for your dolls. American Girl Doll suggests that you paint a clothespin silver and glue it to a pair of white boots (from their book, Doll Play), but what if you don’t want to buy a pair of white boots? Today I will show you how to make ice skates that you can slip on boots that your dolls already have, and take off when you want, no gluing necessary.
My doll is 18 inches, but you could make these for your smaller dolls with a few adjustments.

What you will need:

Scissors (I ended up using bigger scissors than the ones shown)                             Paper Clips (2)

Elastic (I used bead cord)                                                                                     Cardboard
Tape (I also ended up using duct tape)
Your doll’s boots (Or any doll shoes, you only need to trace)
Pencil (And possibly an eraser)

Step 1: Trace your doll’s boots onto the cardboard.

Step 2: Cut out your tracing. Be careful, though.

Step 3: VERY CAREFULLY poke holes into each side of each skate. I used a pencil to stab through the cardboard, but you may need to use something safer.

Step 4: Now cut 3 pieces of elastic for each skate. My pieces were a little less than 3½ inches long.

Step 5: String each piece of elastic through the holes on the skate.

                                                                  It should look like this.

Step 6: Tape the ends of the elastic under the shoe. I ended up having to use duct tape as well so the elastic ends wouldn’t slip out. You can see the duct tape in step 8.

Step 7: Do the same for the other shoe.

Step 8: Tape a paper clip onto the bottom of each shoe for the blade. Once again I put duct tape where it wasn’t covering the blade for more support.

Step 9: Carefully slip the new skates over your doll’s shoes. Make sure that the elastic ends don’t slip out from under the tape.

Thanks to Char (at Doll Diaries) for inspiring me with her doll snowboard and American Girl for inspiring me with their skates. In American Girl’s book, Doll Play, they say to use foil for the ice.

Have fun! See you later! Doll Whiz

  1. Nice skates. I like that the doll can still stand up easily.
